Cultural Phrases
EN – Idiomatic expressions (or idioms) are phrases that convey unique aspects of a person’s culture through their language. Idioms give important insights into the values and beliefs of a group of people.
While idiomatic expressions are often unique to each culture, and don’t often translate to mean the same thing in different languages, it is often the case that different cultures will use these phrases to convey very similar ideas. This shows that, while we all may speak different languages and come from different backgrounds, we often have very similar everyday human experiences.
The two videos below outline some common cultural phrases in Arabic and French. As you watch, think about similar expressions that exist in your own native language.
